You may be aware that we used to have orthodontic practices in Northwest Arkansas under another name before we opened Uncommon Orthodontics in Joplin in September of 2014. During that time, we considered expanding into Joplin but for one reason or another, did not.
Things changed for us when we sold our practices in Arkansas so Dr. Pickard could “retire.” Joplin was recovering from the horrific tornado and we watched, prayed, donated and helped…from a distance.
We can clearly remember standing out in the street in Rogers, Arkansas, watching the tornado move north of us and praying that it would not touch down…and if it did, that it would choose vacant land. As the news came in that evening, our hearts were broken for Joplin. As you fought back, the country was reminded who we are as Americans and what we are made of. When we planned, built, opened our office and became a part of the community, we continued to be amazed at the resilience of this community.
We cannot know, first hand, the terror, loss, devastation and emptiness that the Joplin professional, business and residential community suffered after that horrible tragedy, but we can tell you what we observed as “outsiders.” We saw courage, resilience, determination, character and backbone…plus cooperation, unselfishness and unity.
In this election year with all the anger and division, it can seem like our great nation is losing its way. It would do America (and every single presidential candidate) much good to look at the example set by the Joplin community in the years after May 22, 2011. We honor you, remember your losses and celebrate your uncommon victory every day, but especially during this month. You are a shining example to us all!
